Seattle WA | March 22, 2004 | Integrated Healthcare Systems, Inc., (IHS) a leading provider of affordable automated equipment and software to pharmacies that package, barcode, store, and track drug inventories announced their continued success with the implementation of IHS’ autoPharm™ Inventory Manager and carousel storage systems at Baylor All Saints Medical Center’s (Baylor) Fort Worth and City View, TX hospital pharmacies.
Prior to the installation of IHS’ pharmacy automation, Baylor was using an inefficient, traditional, labor intensive manual shelving system. The initiative to automate the pharmacy was lead by Fort Worth’s Director of Pharmacy, Ron Kolar, M.S., FASHP, who had extensive experience with carousel automation in his previous positions prior to joining Baylor. Kolar recognized the benefits of automating the pharmacy including streamlining drug distribution processes, reducing costs, decreasing space requirements, and increasing productivity within pharmacy operations.
“After researching the options available, in 2002 we chose IHS’ autoPharm™ carousel technology which has a proven track record of reliability, accuracy and efficiency.” said Ron Kolar, Baylor’s Director of Pharmacy. “We selected autoPharm™ because it is a cost effective, flexible and highly functional Inventory Management System. autoPharm™ is easier for pharmacy technicians to learn and use than other systems I have seen.”
autoPharm™ is a completely automated transaction based inventory management system that can combine with other IHS systems to improve patient safety, ensuring that medications dispensed to patient care areas include a barcode that enables tracking from the pharmacy to the bedside.
“IHS’ autoPharm™ allows us to keep an accurate perpetual inventory control with considerable space savings.” said Kolar. “In addition, carousels are a versatile storage solution; they are able to store more sizes and shapes of stock and provide additional security by limiting access to drugs. Carousels are only as good as the program that runs them and autoPharm™ is a superior solution.”
“autoPharm™ has allowed us to meet the demands of growth without requiring additional pharmacy staff and gives us better control of our drug inventories while increasing our picking accuracy.” Kolar concluded. “Overall, autoPharm™ is a straight forward solution that provides efficiency in purchasing and regulating processes within the central pharmacy.”
