Device unveiled at American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Mid-Year Clinical Meeting.
Seattle, Wa | Dec. 4, 2006 | Talyst Inc. — Talyst, a leader in pharmacy automation, today unveiled AutoCool™ access-controlled, refrigerated storage, the first such product designed to combine access control with a pharmacy’s real-time inventory system. The patent-pending AutoCool is driven by market-leading AutoPharm®, the software platform that integrates pharmacy barcoding, storage, inventory, ordering and clinical systems.
AutoCool is being demonstrated for the first time this week, at the Mid-Year Clinical Meeting of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), at the Anaheim (Calif.) Convention Center, booth 3326. Deliveries of the device will begin in July.
“Hospital pharmacies of all sizes told us they needed a better solution for managing the valuable inventory in their refrigerators,” noted James E. Torina, president and chief executive officer. “When a single vial of an injectable drug can have a value in the hundreds, even thousands of dollars, managing inventory based on real-time data becomes critical.”
“AutoCool is a result of Talyst’s single-minded focus on the pharmacy and our commitment to deliver innovative products to assist in controlling costs and increasing patient safety,” he said.
AutoCool provides access to 84 separate compartments, each of which can be used for single or multiple doses of refrigerated medications. Those compartments are automatically rotated to appear behind seven secured doors that have automated lock releases and lighted indicators.
Advantages of AutoCool with AutoPharm include:
• Limits access to a single line item and provides an audit trail for all storage and retrieval activities
• Pick-to-light indicators direct staff through stocking and picking activities
• Can control refrigerated inventory in the central pharmacy or in satellite locations, and multiple units can be used together
• Constant temperature control and remote temperature sensing
• Built for Talyst by a global leader in hospital refrigeration equipment and service.
“Pharmacies are full of inventory silos, with medications and data stored in multiple locations. The refrigerator is one of those silos, separate from the bulk of the inventory data,” explains Ron Strandin, president of Talyst’s Acute Care Group. “AutoCool is a breakthrough in tying the physical security to the real-time pharmacy inventory. This provides the surest tracking of doses, staff access and ordering. That ultimately delivers greater safety, efficiency and cost control.”
AutoCool supports barcode confirmation of all stocking and picking activities. The unit is designed for high reliability and maximum up-time. Twin thermistor sensors provide constant temperature control and recording, including support for remote monitoring. Stainless steel surfaces and accessibility to all areas provide for easy cleaning and maintenance.
As with all Talyst pharmacy solutions, AutoCool with AutoPharm connects with all major brands of pharmacy equipment and hospital information systems, to enable safe medication barcoding and supply chain tracking. Additional Talyst products supported by the AutoPharm platform include AutoCarousel™, AutoPack™ and AutoLabel™.
